This step is awesome. There are a few tricks to install it however. I put some step by step pictures in the review. Your best bet is to go to You Tube and put in Amp Research bedstep install then make and model of vehicle. There''s a great video of it. After assembly you have to attach to the bumper and this is where it gets a little sticky. The bumper bolt''s are put on with an impact wrench. I ended up using a half inch drive snap on breaker bar and a 1 lb rubber mallet to break the 21mm bumper bolts loose. The 3rd bolt is a 15 mm bolt and popped off fairly easy. Getting the step on back on requires a clamp to hold the bumper and frame together as seen in the picture. Once you get that done just a no matter of tightening the bolt''s.

Not sure what the other reviewers got that i didn''t however, this was a royal pain in the you know what just putting it together. The bend of the brackets formed tolerances that would not allow for the bolt holes to properly align causing us to have to retap the threads which never aligned causing bolts to cross thread. Came very close to returning this unit. Evidently their manufacturing Quality Control is just as good as their included instructions. Oh, By the way, did I mention their included instructions suck! THE ONLY WAY TO INSTALL IS BY WATCHING THE VIDEO in the listing making it look easy peasy. HA!
Other issues you will encounter with NO MENTION in the listing which would have been nice to know BEFORE purchasing... the unit can only be installed on the DRIVERS SIDE because of the proprietary forming of the bumper bracket AND this unit is apparently designed for mechanics to install because i doubt seriously the average DIY''er will have a 21MM DEEP WALL socket in their bag of tricks! Would have been nice to mention in the listing. Had I known this was required for installation beforehand I could have ordered one at the same time so I actually could have installed the unit when arrived. ;-(

I got this for my F-150 since the back bumper is a bit too high to hop up onto. Although my truck came with the "old man steps" as original equipment, I really didn''t want to have to drop the tailgate every time I needed to get into the bed, so the BedStep fit the bill for easy access.

The installation was very straightforward but review the instructions carefully before installation. For my installation, I needed 3 sockets (13mm, 15mm and 21mm) as well as two torque wrenches (3/8" and 1/2") and extensions for each. The torques required are 129 ft-lbs for the 21mm socket and both 16 ft-lbs and 33 ft-lbs for the 13mm and 15mm sockets respectively.

The bolts that hold the arm assembly to the BedStep frame are tough to get at for torquing after the frame is in place, so make sure you have a short extension or a 15mm deep well socket to be able to get to them.

Wife and kids all like the new step and I''m sure it will get plenty of use.

Sturdiness: I am right at their spec limit of 300 lb, and feel very confident in this step, by visual sturdiness of the construction and by testing it several times.

Ease of use (for some reason not in the Amazon review "stars" list): one of the reasons I love it. Two or three practices over a minute and it is very natural and easy. This was one of my concern areas, for a couple of reasons. 1) I wasn''t sure how stiff the spring would be to deploy it and to raise it. After using it, I would say they nailed this design -- easy to deploy, easy to retract, yet solidly in place when retracted and driving. 2) A corollary to above, I was specifically worried about retraction, since you "bump it with your foot." No problem it you''re wearing sneakers or work boots or equivalent. I know this is a truck, but I''m not the only one with an office job that commutes in their truck, then stops by the home improvement store to pick up stuff on the way home. I didn''t want to have to change shoes just to retract a step, and I didn''t want to totally ruin dress/office shoes either. This is easily retractable and I do not have that concern. (BTW, it is deployable and retractable by hand.)

Ease of installation: This will be most of the remaining review. I scored it 4/5 since it is definitely a chore, but none of that is the result of poor design or manufacture. (More on manufacturing tolerances below.) Remember that they are making an after-market product that attaches to OEM structural components and that you are working in a tight place. Those two things make it inherently difficult. I do have several suggestions after having done it myself.
1) Acquire the tools needed in advance. As noted by several reviewers, you need 13mm, 15mm and 21 mm sockets. For the 13mm, I recommend short socket. You will use it during assembly before installation, and that can be deep-well, but you will have limited space under the truck where it is needed as well, and deep-well is not needed. For the 15 socket, I recommend an impact socket and impact wrench. Makes assembly easier, but not necessary. Again, you will need a short socket under the truck. For the 21mm socket, you will need a deep-well socket. The bolt under the truck extends just enough to need a deep-well socket, I believe, but you might be able to get away with a short one and a short extender.
2) Follow the instructions and assemble but do not tighten anything. (This is very common and good practice for this type of thing. You cannot line up all of the holes when you have tightened the previous bolts.)
3) DO NOT follow the instructions, and instead use the order of assembly below. This is the biggest complaint about assembly and manufacturing tolerances. Several reviewers report having to re-drill the holes to get it all together, which I did not have to do by using the below approach. Step 2 of the instructions say to install the two 13mm machine screws to hold the two halves of the structural extension together, then Step 3 is to install the 15 mm screws to hold the hinge block to the structural extension. ("Structural extension" and "hinge block" are my terms since nothing in the instructions is labeled. The structural extension is the heavy, two-piece structure that bolts to the truck frame and provides a mounting point for the step.) INSTEAD, reverse these steps. Try as I might, I could not get even the first the 15 mm machine screw in place after installing the 13mm machine screws, and with none of them tightened down. However, by holding everything in place, I could get the 15mm machine screws in place and started into the hinge block. ("Everything" is four components, including both halves of the structural extension, a separate strut, and the hinge block.) Once the 15mm machine screws were in place and not tightened, it was relatively easy to squeeze the two pieces of the structural extension together and line up the holes for the 13mm machine screws to hold it together. It is possible that because of manufacturing tolerance differences that someone else''s unit might be better in the other (original instructions) order, but I doubt it, given the size of the bolts and the geometry of the structural assembly.
4) Use an impact wrench/socket on the 15mm bolts when assembling. This is not strictly necessary, but if just using a socket wrench, you probably need to clamp the hinge block in a vise. I was able to install these hard-to-seat machine screws by holding it together by hand and using an impact wrench. If you do use an impact wrench, line it up very carefully to avoid cross-threading.
5) Do not expect to be able to use an impact wrench when installing on the truck. There is no room. Use a breaker bar. To remove the 21mm nuts, I actually used my torque wrench set to its highest torque setting to effectively turn it into a breaker bar, then adjusted it to the right torque when reinstalling. This is just because I did not carry the breaker bar under the truck with me and this was a workaround.
6) I did not tighten any bolts until installing on the truck. This is the safest option since under the truck you have to line up two holes in the structural extension for each of the two 21mm nuts. However, it is pretty easy to visually align the holes when assembling everything on the workbench/tailgate before installing, so if I had to do it over I would consider tightening everything in the assembly before installing, then just tighten the two 21mm nuts and the one 13mm strut machine screw when installing. The reason for this is that is it very difficult to find room to tighten everything once in place. (See following comments.)
7) Room is so tight I ended up actually using a 1/4" socket wrench on the 13mm strut machine screw. Luckily this is a 16 ft-lb spec, which is easy to achieve. I did not use a torque wrench due to room, but I have confidence in this one, and you have the removal torque as a sanity check. If someone else figured out the right tool, right approach, or correct angle to get something bigger in there, I''d love to hear about it.
8) For the 15mm hinge block machine screws, I was able to get a 3/8" short socket and wrench on these. Higher torque at 32 ft-lb (maybe? not looking at instructions currently), but still easily achievable with a 3/8" socket wrench.
9) There is plenty of room to get to and use a torque wrench, but not an impact wrench, on the 21mm nuts. This is the one you don''t want to guess on, for sure. This affects the structure of the truck itself and is torqued to 129 ft-lb (again, +/-, follow the instructions).

Even with all the above, don''t let this daunt you. Total time to install was 1 hours 20 minutes, including assembling all the tools and cleanup. Probably could do a second one in about 30-45 minutes after these lessons-learned and eliminating the staring-at-it-and-scratching-my-head phases of the install. That is, don''t let it daunt you if you are an average DIYer. If you can do a brake job, you can do this with the right tools. If you expect to take it out of the box and bolt it onto the truck, you might be disappointed.

No big deal on the tools needed as you should expect to need tools of different sizes and types. The problem is the UNclear instructions as there is no writing only pictures that should at least be bigger. Let me be clear even though the instructions were not. The instructions were UNclear because except for pictures which were line drawings, there were none. The real kick in the ass was that the parts do not line up exactly or at least mine did not. If I did not happen to have some alignment punches it would have been impossible to attach this device. You do not need to jack up the vehicle but it would sure help so do it if you can. There are contortions necessary but even with a bad back I could do the job. It is heavy duty metal except for the actual step. DO NOT tighten anything until you have it assembled onto the truck. As mentioned since my parts did not align, I could never have gotten them to if I had tightened as I went. There is a note in the instructions not to tighten but it only indicated that one step to me. Don''t tighten anything until you have it assembled onto the truck. You really need to not dry fit but hold the parts up to the truck to see how it is supposed to go. I would have paid someone to do this for me had I known how hard it was. Now that I got it, I am proud of myself.

Amp Research Bed Step for a 2020 Ford F-150 STX...
First let me say, once installed this is a great product. The assembly itself is rugged, solid, and works flawlessly. The finish is good and there are no sharp edges. The amount of spring tension controlling the up and down movement is perfect. I''m 180 lbs. and the step is solid for my use. Installation was surprisingly easy, though you will need a few sockets, a socket extender, an Allen wrench, and maybe a socket breaker bar and box end wrench. Here are some specifics.

1. The assembly is composed of two major brackets, a minor bracket, the step swing arm assembly, and the step itself. The two major brackets fit together and are held together via two 13mm bolts. Each bracket has a tapped/threaded hole that is supposed to accept the 13mm bolt. One of my brackets was drilled and threaded to an incorrect size and would not accept the bolt. After scratching my head for an hour, I called the Amp Research customer support line and got through to a rep right away. I explained the situation and he asked me to text message some pictures. The next day, I received an email indicating they were shipping me both brackets and a new hardware kit (e.g., bolts, clips, etc.). 10 days later the brackets arrived. That''s kind of slow, but the new brackets and bolts all fit together fit perfectly.

2. After confirming all remaining pieces fit, I then checked to be sure the two main bolts and one minor bolt on the truck, holding the bumper, could be removed. A number of reviews indicate some people have trouble getting these bolts out. I used a 15" breaker bar (e.g., long socket wrench handle extension) and had no problem at all. BTW, I just slid under the back of the truck to install, no jacking or lift necessary.

3. To remove the two main bolts on the truck, the instructions indicate a 21mm deep socket is needed. I dutifully ran off to the store to buy that socket. Only later did I realize that 21mm is pretty close to the 13/16 inch deep socket that came in my socket wrench set (spark plug socket ?). In reality, the 13/16 actually fits the
bolts on the F150 better.

4. The instructions sort of indicate to get everything aligned and together before you start tightening everything down. I pretty much followed those instructions, but I did fully tighten the bolts holding the main brackets together. It might have been tough getting to them after installation. Actually the only bolt I didn''t fully tighten was the one holding the minor bracket. I made that one just tight enough to prevent easy movement, then lined it up on under the truck, and then pulled it out an fully tightened. I''ll emphasize again the two main brackets and swing arm assembly are very, very substantial !!!

5. Everything fit easily together, both the brackets to one another, and the brackets to the truck. I did have to jiggle the brackets a bit to get then to align to one another, but eventually they fell together nicely.

6. All in all, installation was surprisingly easy. Maybe 45 minutes. I could probably do a second one in 20 minutes.

7. The step itself is hard plastic. I''d prefer something more substantial, but it mounts to the swing arm very solidly, and certainly is strong enough to hold me.

No regrets, would buy again !

Anyways, I''ve had this type of bed step since it first came out on three different truck''s(shame my 14 doesn''t fit my 18).
Two things if you''re concerned it will detract from the looks of your truck, don''t.
When it''s folded up against the bumper, it blends right in. Don''t even notice it.
Secondly, you need something to grab and pull yourself up. That''s why ford has the pole and why this is a good design because you can grab onto your bed rail.
All these other steps that mount to the hitch or anything that you step up in the middle without anything to grab, for anyone that''s getting older. Puts a lot of strain on your hips, if there''s nothing to hold onto... getting down is the same thing.
Buy this and you won''t regret it. Best mod you can add to your truck. I''ve had big guys think it won''t hold them and it does every time. Lost without it!!

Just finished installing on my 2019 F-150 XLT. As others have mentioned the quality control is lacking. The two piece bracket does not line up well, and I had to ream them out a bit to allow proper fit of the bolts. The tapping for the threads is also poor, and you need to be very careful not to cross thread the bolts. The holes to mount the bracket to the bumper were correct, and I was happy about that. I had just helped my son in law put one of these steps on his F-350 Super Duty, and his bracket was a solid one piece. However, he had to buy a socket with a slightly thinner wall to install the nuts on the bumper bolts. A standard impact socket was too thick. All this said I still like the step very much. At its price point I expected a little better execution of its engineering design. Just don’t be surprised if this takes you a little longer to install than you might have anticipated.

Operation of the bed step is very simple, push down with foot to lower and gently push upward with foot and bed step retracts and goes up under the truck bumper. Here are some stepping height measurements: with the tailgate down on my F150 it is 38 inches from the ground, the top of the bumper is 33 inches from the ground off, with the bed step lowered it is 18 inches off the ground. So with the bed step it is easy to step up the 18 inches from the ground and then 15 inches from the bed step onto the tailgate.
